Canelo Alvarez Looking Beatable After 2 Poor Performances

By Jim Calfa: Canelo Alvarez looked very ordinary as he beat the shell of Gennadiy Golovkin by a 12-round unanimous decision last Saturday night.

The way Canelo looked in his last two fights, he would be food for a lot of the contenders at 168 and 160. He might as well forget about fighting at 175 again because he is no match for champions Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev.

After this poor performance from Canelo, the fighters are going to push hard to face him because now they see the deterioration in him.

In the post-fight press conference, Canelo tried to attribute his lackluster performance against Golovkin to having a left wrist injury.

However, that doesn’t explain why Canelo continually missed with his uninjured right hand.

While the 32-year-old Canelo clearly beat the 40-year-old Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs), he didn’t look anything special and showed no noticeable improvement over his recent loss to Dmitry Bivol.

In some ways, Canelo looked worse than he did against Bivol because he missed Golovkin so much all night.

Like a lot of aging fighters, Canelo’s accuracy was gone and he seemed unable to tag GGG, even when he was standing right in front of him.

Canelo now looks almost as old as Golovkin, 40, and you can’t blame his left wrist problem.

There is a serious deterioration for Canelo, and it is not something that will go away after surgery on his left wrist. Canelo has made a lot of money, so obviously he can retire at any time, just like Golovkin.

If Canelo wants to come out as a warrior, then he needs to run the gauntlet and fight these fighters before hanging up the gloves:

David Benavidez Dmitry Bivol Artur Beterbiev David Morrell Jermall Charlo

Bivol made Canelo look very ordinary last May by beating him by a 12-round unanimous decision that he won’t soon forget.

“It was a dominating performance, and he proved once again that he is a force to be reckoned with at 168,” Claudia Trejos told KO Artist Sports of Canelo Alvarez’s win over Gennadiy Golovkin last Saturday.

“Obviously, Gennadiy has the ability to take that kind of punishment. He took it all the way into the distance. My respectable fighters.

“Gennadiy Golovkin had a streak of 27 knockout wins. That’s a force to be reckoned with at 160. That doesn’t go away with age. He may be 45; he may be 50. Let’s ask Bernard Hopkins. Let’s ask George Foreman.

“That is some serious power to deal with. So let’s be fair. just because he [Canelo] he took a chance and went up to 175, there’s nothing wrong with that. Lady luck favors the bold, and Canelo is a bold man.

“In fact, he took Bivol and Gennadiy with a broken left hand. He took them both the distance, so let’s be fair.

“I think it would be interesting to see two Mexicans with [David] Benavidez, especially because Benavidez is so tall,” Trejos said when asked who Canelo should fight next.

“He has been there before, and he has faced those fighters. but knowing him [Canelo]he wants to take that 175 just for pride.

“That would also be an interesting fight,” Trejos said of the Nov. 5 bout between Bivol and Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez.

“A tall, lanky Mexican fighter [Zurdo Ramirez]. He was the first Mexican boxer to earn a championship win at 168. So this is going to be an interesting matchup. Let’s not forget that Lefty is no longer at 168. Now he is at 175.

“So if he is [Canelo] Willing to take that fight, two Mexicans in 1775, all I can say is if that happens, get ready. Those are wazoo fireworks,” Trejos said.
