Calamitous defeat dooms Juve’s remaining Champions League hopes -Juvefc.com

Just when you think we’ve hit rock bottom, this version of Juventus manages to find a new low.

The Bianconeri had no choice but to return home with three points to keep their meager Champions League qualification aspirations alive.

However, they suffered their most humiliating defeat yet at the hands of Maccabi Haifa, who put on a valiant display.

The hosts took the lead early on when Wojciech Szczesny was unable to deflect Omer Atzili’s header. The same player doubled his team’s lead in the 42nd minute with a shot that left the Polish goalkeeper with no options.

To make matters worse for Max Allegri’s team, Ángel Di María suffered another muscle injury during the first half, his third of the season.

In the second half, Juve’s performance improved slightly after the introduction of Manuel Locatelli, who did a decent job in midfield, while Matias Soulè was arguably Juventus’ best player on the pitch despite his brief appearance.

However, the team still couldn’t produce too many chances, with Dusan Vlahovic not even threatening the opposing goalkeeper.

At the end of the day, Juventus accepted their fate as they return home with their tail between their legs.

The Bianconeri are now on par with Maccabi in third place. Benfica and PSG are now on top of qualifying for the Champions League round of 16, while the Italians can only aim for a Europa League spot.
