Bruno Fernandes stars as Portugal through to the knock-outs after dramatic win over Uruguay – Man United News And Transfer News

Portugal has beaten Uruguay 2-0 to reach the round of 16 with one game to play.

Manchester United had a lot of interest in this match with Diogo Dalot as an unused substitute, Bruno Fernandes playing the full 90 and ex-Rojo Ronaldo also on the pitch.

For Uruguay, Facundo Pellistri entered the match in minute 62 while former Reds Edinson Cavani and Guillermo Varela were starters.

It was Portugal who dominated possession in the first half with Bruno Fernandes seeing his shot just miss the post in the first ten minutes.

Uruguay was growing in the game and starting to use their attacking channels better.

About half an hour later, Bentancur made an emphatic run into the box, plowing his way through several Portuguese defenders and finding himself one-on-one with Diogo Costa, but he stopped him well – it was the best chance of the game so far.

Portugal started the second half on their front foot and a chance fell on United goal Joao Félix, who could only find the side of the net.

Fernandes was yelling at him like he would have had a tap-in if his teammate had fixed it for him instead of taking the tight angle shot himself.

However, moments later, Portugal took the lead, although who scored is debatable.

He came from a brilliant ball into the box from Fernandes and looked like he went straight into the goal, but Ronaldo claimed he caught the slightest header.

At the other end, Cavani found himself with an opportunity but the former Red made a mistake kicking the ball and it went on target.

Pellistri entered the fray when Uruguay changed their formation, and she looked lively during her cameo.

Luis Suárez came on for Cavani and had a good chance from close range after a set piece, but also found the side of the net.

As Uruguay knocked on the gate in an attempt to get back into this game, Portugal went on the attack, receiving a controversial penalty.

José María Giménez fell backwards and lowered his arm to break the fall and the ball hit his arm. The referee did not give it but the VAR called the monitor and the decision was annulled.

Fernandes jumped and jumped and jumped, causing the goalkeeper to leave early, and Fernandes scored coolly.

He had a chance to secure a hat-trick in stoppage time, but his shot from the edge of the box hit the post.

Take the option of qualification out of Uruguay’s hands as they need to beat Ghana and will depend on South Korea losing or drawing with Portugal.

If South Korea wins, Uruguay could still qualify, but would need to win by one more than South Korea.
