Midfielder Enock Mwepu was forced to announce his retirement as a professional footballer due to a heart condition.

He fell ill during a flight to join the Zambian camp during the international break last month. The 24-year-old underwent medical tests earlier this month, which diagnosed him with a hereditary heart condition.

The south coast club revealed that Mwepu could go into cardiac arrest if he continues his playing career. On his social media, he posted: “A boy from a small township in Zambia called Chambishi has news to share. He stood firm to follow his dreams of playing football at the highest level and, by the grace of God, he lived out his dream by reaching the Premier League.

However, some dreams do come to an end, so it is with sadness that I announce the need to hang up my boots due to the medical advice I have received.”

Mwepu made 24 Premier League appearances for the South Coast club, registering two goals and five assists. He also won Brighton’s Goal of the Season award last season for his goal against Liverpool.

The Reds signed Arthur on a season-long loan from Juventus on deadline day. However, he has struggled to get fit since he joined and has yet to play a league game for the Reds.

His injury has left Jurgen Klopp with a huge headache as he tries to revive the Reds’ season. Last season’s Premier League runners-up have had a rocky start to the current season, winning just two of their first eight league games.
