Brentford’s Ivan Toney could face six-month ban despite denying charges

It’s unlikely there are too many people who disagree with the idea that Brentford hitman Ivan Toney deserves a chance on the international stage.

Indeed, Gareth Southgate previously seemed keen to give the striker his England cap, only after allegations of inappropriate betting surfaced through the Daily Mail and denied him the chance to don a Three Lions shirt.

The big embarrassment of the moment was that Toney was in remarkable club form and surely could have added something to the England team at the World Cup in Qatar.

For the time being, Brentford manager Thomas Frank remains a strong supporter of his centre-forward, although he may not have the opportunity to use his services for much longer.

According to Sky Sports, the FA now have its answers to the allegations that it breached the betting rules and, after considering the same, will decide on the appropriate punishment.

Ivan Toney is the subject of an FA investigation

Although Toney has admitted to breaking the rules, he has denied several of the allegations, and it is with this in mind that the FA will carefully review his responses before making any judgement.

Sky Sports suggests that Sky Sports News anticipate a ban of roughly six months which, depending on if and when it is administered, will severely damage Brentford’s chances of moving up the Premier League table.

It will also be interesting to see the West London club’s response from then on should a lengthy ban come into play.

Having openly admitted wrongdoing, continued support for Toney would surely send the wrong message.
