Boxing Results: Andy “Destroyer” Ruiz Defeats Luis “King Kong” Ortiz!

By Ken Hissner: At the Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles, California on Sunday night on Fox PPV Tom Brown (TGB Promotions), Marshall Kauffman (Kings Promotions), Sampson Lewkowicz (Sampson Boxing) and Premier Boxing Champions performed in the previous Main Event heavyweight champion Andy “Destroyer” Ruiz, who scored 3 knockdowns in an otherwise dull fight defeating Luis “King Kong” Ortiz.

In the co-feature, WBO Intercontinental Lightweight Champion Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz stopped Eduardo “Zurdito” Ramirez with a pair of knockdowns in the second round for the WBC Silver Lightweight Title.

In the Main Event former heavyweight champion Andy “Destroyer” Ruiz, 34-2 (22), #268 ¾, of Imperial, CA, southpaw Luis “King Kong” Ortiz, 33-2 (28), #245 ½, from Cuba and Miami, FL, 12 rounds.

In the first round, at the last minute, Ortiz rocked Ruiz with a left to the chin. In the second round, Ruiz dropped Ortiz with a right hand to the side of the head for a count of 8 from referee Thomas Taylor. Seconds later, another right to the side of the head and down was Ortiz again for a count of 8 from referee Taylor.

Little action occurred in the third through sixth rounds. In the last twenty seconds of the seventh round, a Ruiz right to the side of Ortiz’s head and down went for a count of 8 from referee Taylor.

From the eighth to the 10th, Ortiz used an effective jab backing up Ruiz, who did little in return. In the eleventh round, Ruiz landed enough rights to nearly close Ortiz’s left eye. In the twelfth and final round, Ortiz boxed Ruiz, who regressed for the entire round with both of them exhausted when the bell rang.

The scores were 113-112, 114-111 twice and 115-110 this writer.

In the co-feature Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz, 24-2-1 (17), #135, of Mexico City, MEX, stopped southpaw Eduardo “Zurdito” Ramírez, 27-3-3 (12), #134 ½ , from Los Mochia, Sinaola, MEX, at 2:27 of the second round of a scheduled 12-rounder, for the WBC Silver lightweight title.

At the midpoint of the second round, Cruz dropped Ramírez with a left hook to the chin for a count of 8 from referee Jack Reiss, who gave Ramírez too much time to recover. Cruz jumped on Ramírez and dropped him with a combination in a neutral corner, forcing referee Reiss to wave him off.

Former 3 division champion Abner Mares, 32-3-2 (15), #134 ¼, from MEX and Montebello, CA, returns after 4 years and ends in a majority tie with Miguel Flores, 25-4-1 ( 12), #134 ½, from MEX and Spring, TX, in 10 rounds.

In the first five rounds, Mares outboxed Flores. From the sixth to the tenth round, Flores again outboxed the former champion, who returned after four years and slowed down, but enough to earn a draw. The referee was Jerry Cantú.

The scores were 96-94 Mares, 95-95 twice.

WBC Continental-Americas lightweight champion southpaw Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela, 12-1 (8), #134 ½, of MEX and Seattle, WA, was stopped by southpaw Edwin De Los Santos, 15-1 (14) , #133 ¾ , from Santo Domingo, RD, at 1:08 of the third round of 10 scheduled.

In the first rounds, the first thirty seconds De Los Santos landed a triple jab and went to Valenzuela’s chin. In the last minute, De Los Santos landed a left to the chin that surprised Valenzuela.

In the second round, De Los Santos was getting away with it until a left hook to the chin from Valenzuela dropped him for a count of 8 from referee Ray Corona. Seconds later, De Los Santos hit a left double to the chin that dropped Valenzuela for a count of 8, but De Los Santos hit him when he was down and lost a point from referee Corona.

In the third round, De Los Santos dropped Valenzuela with a left to the chin for a count of 8 from referee Corona. Getting up, De Los Santos was in trouble again, prompting referee Corona to stop the fight.

Super Welter Joey “Small Town Soldier” Spencer, 16-0 (10), #154 ½, from Fenton, MI, defeated Kevin Salgado, 14-1-1 (9), #153 ½, from San Antonio, TX, about boring 10 rounds.

In the first three rounds it was Spencer’s jabs and left hooks against Salgado’s jabs. In the fourth round, Spencer landed a 3-punch combination in the last minute of the round on the first offense in addition to jabs in the fight.

The fifth round was Salgado’s first round win. In the seventh through tenth rounds, the fans started booing for more action. The referee was Jack Reiss.

The scores were 99-91 twice and 100-90, 98-92 this writer. Super Bantam Ra’eese Aleem, 20-0 (12), #121 ½, of Las Vegas, NV, defeated Mike “Magic” Plania, 26-2 (13), #122, of General Santos City, PH, over 10 rounds

In the second round, Aleem dropped Plania and earned a count of 8 from referee Ray Corona.

The scores were 100-89 by all 3 judges.

Heavyweight southpaw “Prince” Charles Martin, 29-3-1 (26), #260, of Carson, CA, knocked out Devin Vargas, 22-8 (9), #243, at 1:00 of the quarter round of a scheduled 8 rounds.
