Canelo Alvarez put a stamp on his five-year rivalry with Gennadiy Golovkin, scoring a clear, albeit close, decision win over GGG tonight to retain his undisputed super middleweight championship.
Canelo (52-2-2, 39 KOs) says he’ll need surgery on his left hand, but he’s turning his attention to a rematch with WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, who clearly beat Canelo last May ( another fight scored too close) and has an upcoming defense on November 5 in Abu Dhabi against Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez.
Golovkin, 40 (42-2-1, 37 KOs), indicated that he will keep fighting as he intends to return to middleweight and defend the two titles he still holds in that division.
We usually like to see what fellow fighters had to say on social media after a big fight, but honestly, there wasn’t much talk from fellow pros, because aside from the cards being too close in the eyes of everyone, there just wasn’t much to say about the fight.
But this is what some said:
I blame his trainer…he’s telling him to box and use his jab when he should be taking it.

Ggg won 3rds at best! Maybe 2!

Canelo always had this fight in his back pocket. It’s not impressive. Benavidez is the real test at 168, not a 40-year-old GGG.

GGG you had a great run. Go back to middleweight and let’s fight for those belts you still have in December or just let them go and I’ll take care of them for the next two years while you enjoy retirement… you earned it, champ.

I respect that Canelo is passionate about Bivol, he said it is important to me and my people, my legacy. When a Mexican says it’s important to his people, he’s serious about that shit.

The scorecards that were read put more concern on Canelo than the 12 rounds he just went through with GGG! 115-113! Wow! #CaneloGGG3

9-3 and that is being generous, two warriors, one is still elite and the other is not anymore, boxing is about time.

Comfortable win for Canelo, GGG had a late charge Canelo tired near the end but unanimous win #CaneloGGG3
