Billy Joe Saunders assures fans “the weight is coming off” after gym return

Billy Joe Saunders is losing weight after photos circulated of the boxing star looking massively above his former super middleweight limit.

Saunders says he will return to boxing despite being out of action for sixteen months since his loss to Canelo Alvarez.

The Hatfield man has had to battle the negativity surrounding his career since moving up in weight after the first loss of his career.

Serious questions about his career were raised because Saunders had gone unnoticed ever since he received the biggest paycheck.

The former two-weight world champion assured that the training of the fans to get back in shape is already underway.

“I think this year is definitely possible for me. Now I am in the gym, I have fun and I go twice a day.

“I’m just enjoying it with the guys. I seem to be enjoying it. I have lost weight and am getting in shape every day.

“I’m not going to rush anything. When I’m ready, I’m ready.

“It could be at the end of the year or the beginning of the next. We’ll find out soon. It all depends on the available opponents.”

Chris Eubank Jr Rematch

A long-term target for Saunders could be Chris Eubank Jr. The pair remain locked in rivalry after fighting in a back-and-forth match in 2014.

Dominating the first six rounds, Saunders was pinned down as Eubank Jr. came on strong. He managed to maintain his undefeated streak via a close split decision.

Since then, the contempt between the couple has been as strong as ever.

Eubank has to go through Conor Benn on Oct. 8 to make a 2023 collision a reality. Saunders also has to send in a lumber shed.

Expressing his views on Eubank Jr. vs. Benn, Saunders told DAZN, “A lot of people are favoring Eubank because of his size.

“You know, the smart thing the Benns have done here is obviously put the weight restriction on it. Now it all depends on how [Eubank is] will handle that at 32.

The contract weight is 157 pounds, and he’s only allowed to gain so many pounds before a certain time.

“Many boxers may not be able to rehydrate to where they need to be.

“If you could give Conor Benn another year of experience and then give him the advantage of the weight stage, I would definitely, without hesitation, say Conor Benn.

“With Eubank’s experience, he’s been in some big fights, but Conor Benn, you can never count him out. I have a feeling he’s going to get something out of the bag.”

Conor Benn fight

Speaking of the family feud between his parents dating back to the 1990s, Saunders added: “I’ve talked to [Conor]I have been talking to him for a while. He looks so serene. He wants it so much.

“There is something at stake here that no one will ever understand, only them.”

Eubank Jr. had argued that the 157-pound catchweight stipulation when he recently fought at 168 would handicap him significantly.

Saunders says the Brighton man’s draw evens the fight.

“When he says he is at 60% [due to the weight]he’s probably saying that to cover his own back, to be honest.

“Maybe it’s worrying you a bit. I will present it as a completely 50-50 fight.”
