BBC pundit spotted season-defining Liverpool change during Man City win – will delight Jurgen Klopp

The loss of ‘intensity’ – a buzzword that has become synonymous with Jurgen Klopp’s style of football at Anfield – played a big part in Liverpool’s upside-down form from the start of 2022/23.

Chris Sutton believes the Reds may have regained that vital essence in their 1-0 performance against Manchester City at the weekend.

“This was a great goal for Salah, he hasn’t been at his best this season, there was a hat-trick in the week against Rangers, but maybe that goal did him a lot of good,” the pundit told BBC Radio 5. Live (via BBC Sport). “I’ve seen a different Liverpool today, the way they defended after the goal, the intensity they played, maybe this is the game.”

It’s an admission that will delight the technician after weeks on his side churning out false dawn after false dawn.

However, a hidden test awaits us when West Ham visit L4 tomorrow, and we need a win to show that consistency can be achieved.

While the Hammers may not be as tough a contender as the league champions, David Moyes’s men have enough firepower on hand to ask serious questions of a backline that, for the most part, has struggled to assert itself

That, of course, feeds into our struggles in midfield, but Klopp will have been more than relieved to see defensive midfielder Fabinho approaching anything like his best performances in the famous red shirt against Manchester City.

A renewed vigor in midfield and beyond could provide us with exactly the boost needed to launch a run of positive results and get back into the top four before the World Cup arrives.
