Bayern struggles continue, but Tel sets scoring record

Bayern struggle

Bayern Munich’s struggles in the Bundesliga continued on Saturday. The Bavarians dropped points in their third game in a row with a 2-2 draw against the visitors from Stuttgart.

The visitors scored a late added-time goal from a penalty to tie the match. Newcomer Matthijs de Ligt committed a foul inside the box. So, Serhou Guirassy did not make any mistakes from the point.

Bayern’s three draws in their first six league games are historically unusual for the club. Currently, the club is at 12 points at this stage of the season. Despite closing the day top of the table based on goal differential, this is Bayern’s lowest point total after six games in the Bundesliga since 2010. That year, Bayern finished third in the table when Bayer Leverkusen finished top ahead of Borussia Dortmund.

Bayern’s pole position in the table is partly due to points lost by Dortmund. Indeed, Saturday presented an opportunity for Dortmund to extend their lead over their rivals. However, a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of RB Leipzig kept Dortmund to 12 points, now level with Bayern.

On Sunday, Freiburg can usurp Munich’s monopoly at the top of the table with a result against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

A ray of light in Bayern’s struggles

A bright spot on the day for Bayern was Mathys Tel. The 17-year-old striker scored the opening goal of the game against Stuttgart. In doing so, he became the club’s youngest goalscorer in the Bundesliga. Tel, a highly regarded prospect, was transferred to the German champions earlier this summer in a massive $22m move from French club Rennes.

He has goals in both of his starts this season. Previously, he put his name on the record of Bayern’s 5-0 win over Viktoria Koln in the DFB-Pokal.

Many fans and pundits were interested to see how Bayern could function without their superstar striker Robert Lewandowski. The Polish international recently left the club after eight highly successful seasons with Bayern. Lewandowski scored an incredible 344 goals in 375 games in total for the German national team. Barcelona took out the 34-year-old striker from Bavaria in a deal worth almost $50 million.

While Bayern may have gotten off to an unusually slow start, they nonetheless possess a strong 14-goal differential in the league. No other Bundesliga team comes close to this impressive number. The defending champions hope to level the ship next weekend as they travel to Augsburg for their next Bundesliga match. However, an interesting showdown with Barcelona and their former star Lewandowski is scheduled for Tuesday.
