Bayern spoils Lewandowski’s return, Liverpool beat Ajax

Bayern's Lewandowski is back

On a busy Tuesday afternoon, there were a number of notable results. The highlight of the day was Barcelona’s trip to the Allianz Arena to play Bayern Munich.

While Barcelona have sought to resolve their biggest enemy in recent years, the game mattered for another reason.

Bayern beat Barça on Lewandowski’s return

Bayern Munich spoiled Robert Lewandowski’s return to Bavaria on Tuesday. The superstar striker played eight seasons for the German club but transferred to Barcelona this summer. Bayern kept Lewandowski quiet and beat Barca 2-0 on the night.

While the visitors somewhat dominated the German giants in the first half, Bayern scored twice in four minutes during the second half to win the match. Lucas Hernández headed in from a corner to open the scoring. Leroy Sane finished off Barça with a great run and a clever finish to double Bayern’s lead.

Lewandowski had opportunities to score, but was unable to capitalize on his chances.

Liverpool returns to winning ways

Liverpool bounced back after an embarrassing performance against Napoli last week. The Reds needed a late goal from Joel Matip to take all three points in Group A. Mohamed Salah scored his first goal in five games to give Liverpool the early lead. Ajax, however, responded by leveling the score just 10 minutes later.

Mohammed Kudus hit a thunderous shot into the top corner to make it 1-1. It was the Ghanaian’s fifth goal in four games for Ajax. The match remained even until Matip scored with a header in the 89th minute of the match. Although the ball did not hit the back of the net, the referee’s watch vibrated, indicating that a goal was scored. Replays showed the ball crossed the goal line with room to spare. It was Liverpool’s first victory in two weeks.

Sporting leave it late against Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur, however, lost their first match of the current campaign. Spurs failed in Portugal losing the game 2-0 thanks to two late goals from Sporting. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris thought he had earned Spurs a point away from home after a great save in the 89th minute of the game. Sporting, however, had other ideas.

Paulinho scored seconds after Lloris’ save and the resulting corner kick. With victory essentially in the bag, Sporting added another goal just two minutes later. Arthur Gomes, who had just been substituted for the game, made a mad dash through the Spurs defense and scored to make no mistake about the result. The win was Sporting’s first against an English team in a decade.
