Barcelona star set to miss World Cup after surgery decision

Barcelona have confirmed that Ronald Araujo will undergo surgery on a thigh injury he sustained while playing for Uruguay during the international break and is likely to miss the World Cup.

The center-back was injured in Uruguay’s clash with Iran and had to make the tough decision of whether to have surgery or not.

Had he opted for the latter, he might have been able to play in the World Cup in November, but the 23-year-old chose his long-term health and is now likely to miss the tournament in Qatar, ESPN reports.

Barcelona issued a statement on Monday to confirm Araujo’s decision, which read:

“Ronald Araujo will undergo surgery on Wednesday for the avulsion of the adductor longus tendon in his right thigh. The operation will be performed by Dr. Lasse Lempainen, under the supervision of the Club’s medical staff, in Turku, Finland”.

This is a huge but admirable decision Araujo has made, as not many players would have prioritized their long-term health over a World Cup.

This is not only a blow to the player but also to their teams. The central defender is a very important player for both Barcelona and Uruguay and they will surely miss his presence in the coming months.

2-3 months is the expected time for the defender’s recovery, according to reports, as he will miss El Clasico and also a large part of Barcelona’s Champions League campaign.
