Barcelona attacker wants to leave amid Manchester United interest

Barcelona attacker Memphis Depay has been linked with a move away from Camp Nou. Depay joined the Blaugrana on a free transfer during the 2021 summer window.

He enjoyed a decent debut season at Camp Nou, registering 12 goals and two assists in 28 La Liga appearances. However, the arrival of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha this summer has seen him drop down the club’s pecking order.

Depay has managed to make just two league appearances this season. He is in the last year of his contract at the club and it is unlikely that he will sign an extension.

Memphis Depay demands free transfer

According to the Express (h/t Sportskeeda), Memphis Depay could demand a free transfer from Barcelona in January amid interest from his former club Manchester United. The Catalan club could grant his wish given his economic situation.

Depay previously spent the 2015-16 season at Old Trafford. He made 33 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils, scoring two goals in the process. The Dutch international left the Manchester outfit to join the Ligue 1 club in the summer window of 2016.

However, they could look to sign him again as a possible replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese international has shown in recent months his desire to leave the Red Devils. Aside from Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur is another Premier League club that has shown interest in signing Depay.

The 23-year-old attacker will end his contract next summer. West Ham United are reportedly leading the race to secure his services. He was recently asked by talkSPORT about his thoughts on joining a Premier League club.

Diaz said: “It’s nice. But I just have to focus on playing for Rovers week in and week out and putting in the results and scoring goals for the club. So right now I’m here and I’ll do everything when I have the shirt on and I work hard.”

Diaz won Blackburn Rovers Player of the Season for 2021-22 and was also included in the EFL Championship Team of the Season last year.
