Aston Villa manager search latest from Fabrizio Romano

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Aston Villa’s search for a new manager in his exclusive CaughtOffside column on Substack.

Villa sacked Steven Gerrard on Thursday and has been linked with some big names as potential replacements, but Romano has downplayed links with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim.

Villa have made a poor start to the season and are currently 17th in the Premier League table, with just two wins from eleven games so far.

Gerrard failed to make the desired impact despite receiving plenty of support on the transfer market, and it seems clear that it was time for him to leave.

However, as to who could be next, it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to get a clearer idea, according to Romano.

“Mauricio Pochettino at Aston Villa does not seem to happen, the Argentine wants to wait for different opportunities. Rubén Amorim also seems unlikely, as he is tempted to stay at Sporting and continue with the current project”, explained Romano.

“Aston Villa are exploring the manager market, we should have more of an idea who they are going to pick next week. Personally, I think Amorim was a fantastic idea, as he is a great potential manager for the present and the future, but Sporting have no intention of letting him go.”

Pochettino did a great job in his time in the Premier League with Tottenham and Southampton, but perhaps he always seemed a bit ambitious for a club like Villa.

Meanwhile, Amorim is another difficult name for someone like Villa to incorporate, as he is considered one of the best young managers in the game.
