Argentina beat the Netherlands on penalties to reach World Cup semi-final

Argentina has reached the semifinals of the World Cup.

The South Americans advanced to the next stage of the competition after beating the Netherlands by Louis Van Gaal 4-3 on penalties.

Despite leading the game 2-0 for 83 minutes, the Netherlands, thanks to an inspired substitution from Wout Weghorst, managed to score twice, including a brilliantly worked free-kick.

The two teams, who could not be separated after 90 minutes of play, continued with extra time.

Although both had their fair share of chances, in extra time both nations failed to score again, resulting in a tense penalty shootout.

Unfortunately for the Europeans, two missed penalty kicks by Virgil Van Dijk and Steven Berghuis put them at a disadvantage early on and more or less sealed their World Cup fate.

With Enzo Fernandes the only Argentine player to miss, the South Americans won 4-3 and will now prepare for a semi-final match against Luka Modric’s Croatia.

The first of the two semi-finals of the competition, which is scheduled to take place at the Lusail Iconic Stadium, will kick off at 7pm (UK time) on Tuesday 13 December and will be broadcast live on ITV and BBC.
