Anthony Joshua trainer not on board with taking Tyson Fury fight

Anthony Joshua’s team has agreed to terms for a massive fight with Tyson Fury on December 3. However, Joshua’s trainer, Robert Garcia, says he has been in contact with Joshua’s team about ongoing negotiations.

Before facing Fury, he would have liked two or three fights for AJ after his disaster in Saudi Arabia.

Garcia revealed that he spoke with Joshua’s management company after his loss against Oleksandr Usyk. He admits that he has not had a conversation with the fighter himself.

Garcia is aware of ongoing negotiations to stage the fight between the UK’s top two heavyweights in December, but is not involved in the decision process.

“Yes, I have spoken with [Joshua’s team]”, Robert García told IZQUIERDAZO in an exclusive interview. “But I’m the newest member of the team, and those are decisions that have to be made between them.”

Less than four months after back-to-back losses to unified champion Usyk, AJ, who also lost to Andy Ruiz, is ready to fight Fury.

Garcia feels that, in his opinion, two or three fights for AJ before going into a British matchup would have been a great choice. Fury’s team seems to be in a hurry to finish the fight after their second loss.

Joshua initially accepted an offer last Friday.

“In my opinion, I would have liked two or three fights [before Fury]Garcia explained. “But obviously, this is a business. It is a massive fight in Europe.

“I can’t help but accept that the purse would be a lot of money if it’s a massive fight.”

Will Tyson and Joshua fight?

As the newest two-time world champion, Joshua’s team member Garcia knows AJ’s decision is not in his hands.

“The people around AJ are smart and will make the best decision. I am the newest member of the team,” said Robert.

“Those decisions do not belong to me. You have a very smart management team and will make the right decision. Actually, the decision is theirs to make.”

Last week, Tyson Fury promoters Frank Warren and Bob Arum appeared to be issuing a December 3 deadline for Joshua to accept the fight. And according to Joshua’s team, he has agreed to all the terms for a Cardiff clash with the WBC title holder.

Garcia thought the pressure Fury put on the DAZN star to make up his mind had another intention. It was to gain leverage for Usyk to take the unification match.

Robert García explains that he has spoken with Joshua’s team in the last few hours to understand the status of the negotiation.

“Timeframe? We haven’t discussed a deadline to make the Joshua-Fury fight,” Robert explained. “To me, if you want my opinion, I think Fury is doing all of this to put pressure on Usyk to get the unification done.

“It’s a massive fight. Fury started talking, and yes, he has talked to Joshua’s team because they told me. But it may be part of the strategy to put pressure on Usyk to make him believe that he is missing his chance.”

Garcia insists on his plan for Anthony Joshua to train at his California gym. However, Garcia does not rule out traveling to England again to coach Matchroom Boxing fighters again.

“I know that [everything is good] with my team and my son, Mikey [García]. But I can’t leave for another couple of months [at the end of the year].

“I know I can, but I prefer to stay. I know I can, but I prefer to stay here. That the prep camp would be here in California.”

Indisputable

Unlike the former WBA, IBF and WBO ruler, Fury is in great shape. “The Gypsy King” recently defeated American heavyweight Deontay Wilder and fellow Briton Dillian Whyte in their last bouts.

If Fury wins at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, as expected, he will be looking for a potential uncontested clash with Usyk between February and April 2023.

A loss to Joshua puts his career in doubt and rules out the possibility of a rematch at Wembley next year.
