Anthony Hudson named temporary USMNT head coach

United States Soccer has announced that Gregg Berhalter will not take over the team’s training camp in January. Instead, Anthony Hudson has been named the USMNT head coach for camp and upcoming friendly games.

Hudson previously managed the Bahrain and New Zealand national teams. He scooped up the 2016 Oceania Football Confederation Nations Cup with New Zealand. In addition, the coach coached the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer and the United States Under-20 team. Hudson joined the USMNT as an assistant coach in 2021.

Football organization investigates allegations

US Soccer is currently investigating a domestic violence incident involving Berhalter and allegations of blackmail. USMNT head coach kicking his girlfriend in the legs during an altercation that took place 31 years ago. Berhalter is now married to the aforementioned woman.

The 49-year-old coach claims someone contacted US Soccer during the World Cup in Qatar saying they had information about the incident. US Soccer issued a statement regarding the troubling issues.

“Through this process, US Soccer became aware of possible inappropriate behavior toward various members of our staff by individuals outside of our organization. We take such behavior seriously and have expanded our investigation to include those allegations,” US Soccer said.

Anthony Hudson is not necessarily the permanent head coach of USMNT

Berhalter’s future with the USMNT is still up in the air. The Americans had a pretty up and down World Cup 2022. Although they advanced through a difficult group stage, the USMNT were defeated by the Netherlands in the knockout round. Berhalter made some interesting training decisions. He has held the position of head coach of the US team since 2018.

Hudson will now control the upcoming USMNT training camp and will be sidelined for two friendly games. The Americans face Serbia on January 25 and Colombia three days later. Both games, as well as the training camp, will be played in the Los Angeles area.
