Andy Robertson Becomes Defender With Most Premier League Assists

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has become the defender with the most assists in English Premier League history.

Andy Robertson accomplished the feat during Liverpool’s win over Aston Villa in their first Premier League game after the winter break. Liverpool secured a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa, with Andy Robertson providing the assist for the first of those three goals.

Liverpool opened the scoring in the fifth minute of the game after Andy Robertson squared the ball for Mohamed Salah to finish from close range. That brought Robertson’s Premier League assist tally to 54. No defender has provided more Premier League assists than the Scotland international.

He set the record after surpassing former Leicester City left-back Leighton John Baines’ tally of 53 assists in the Premier League.

Andy Robertson has accomplished the feat in 173 Premier League appearances for Liverpool. For comparison, Leighton John Baines recorded 53 assists in 348 Premier League appearances, more than double the games Robertson has played in the English top flight.

Third on the list of Premier League defenders with the most assists, meanwhile, is Andy Robertson’s Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Liverpool right-back has 45 Premier League assists to his name.

Although the most assisted defender in the Premier League, Andy Robertson is ranked 33rd on the list of players with the most assists in the Premier League. Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs tops the Premier League assist chart with 162 assists.

Among players currently plying their trade in the Premier League, Kevin de Bruyne has more assists in the English top flight than anyone. The Manchester City midfielder has so far amassed 95 assists in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, against Aston Villa, Virgil van Dijk doubled their lead on 37 minutes after Mohamed Salah’s opener. Aston Villa reduced their gap to one goal in the 59th minute thanks to Ollie Watkins’ headed goal.

But Stefan Bajcetic sealed the victory for Liverpool on 81 minutes, and the 18-year-old who came on as a substitute showed great composure to slot the ball into the net.

The win means Liverpool now have 25 points from 15 Premier League games so far this season. They are 15 points behind Arsenal, who sit at the top of the Premier League points table.
