Alex McLeish says Newcastle are set to complete a major coup in the coming days

Callum Wilson signing a new deal will be a ‘blow’ for Eddie Howe, according to Sky Sports pundit Alex McLeish.

According to recent reports, Wilson, who joined Newcastle United from Bournemouth in 2020, has signed a two-year contract extension.

The club have yet to officially confirm that the 30-year-old has renewed his contract, but given The Athletic’s proven credibility, we’ll assume that’s true and an announcement is imminent.

Speaking about Wilson’s reported decision to stay at St James’ Park, Sky Sports’ McLeish, who spoke to Football Insider, said: “Wilson has been a thorn in the side of many Premier League defenders over the years. .

“He’s had a couple of injuries recently and that’s been a huge blow to Newcastle, but when you see that guy on the pitch, the scoring opportunities he gets into, you know you’ve got a great player there.

“I was going to say it’s a blow to Newcastle. But the blow was that the new owners came in and backed Eddie Howe and gave the club the money to do deals like this and push the team further up the table.

“Now they can keep a player who has been Mr. Consistent for them in terms of goal return. Teaching those younger players will come in time, though I bet he’s doing some of that already.”
