Liverpool released goalkeeper to join Scandinavian club in bold move – Liverpool FC

Six months after his release, former Liverpool goalkeeper Liam Hughes has signed for a new club and agreed a shock free transfer to Scandinavia.

Hughes was initially signed by Liverpool in 2021 as a training goalkeeper and arrived from Celtic to strengthen the academy teams.

But the Northern Irishman warmed the bench twice with the first team (against Sheffield United in the Premier League and against Preston in the Carabao Cup in 2021), in addition to being called up for his national team.

However, his stay on Merseyside ended in July, as one of 10 players released at the end of last season.

Until this week, he was one of only two yet to find a new club, but Hughes has now joined Finnish side FC Haka on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Veikkausliiga side, who are preparing for the 2024 campaign that begins in the Liigacup later this month.

His arrival comes weeks after the appointment of compatriot Andy Smith as manager, with Hughes convinced by the opportunity to compete for the first-choice starting job at a top club.

“We had met before in Liverpool, but a few weeks ago I received a call where I heard that Andy wanted to meet me,” explained Hughes, who will wear the number 1 shirt.

“We met the next day and he told me everything about the club and the project and what this could do for my career.”

Hughes added: “I have some goals for the next few years of my career but the most important thing now is to go in and show the team the best version of myself and that I am good enough to represent this club.” .

“I hope that with my own contribution I can help the team be successful in the next season.”

Following Hughes’ deal with FC Haka, the only player released by Liverpool this summer who has not yet officially signed for a new team is striker Fidel O’Rourke.

His academy teammates Oludare Olufunwa (St Johnstone), Jack Bearne (Greenock Morton), Charlie Hayes-Green (Bolton) and Iwan Roberts (Bala Town) have landed elsewhere.
