Manchester United are about to further specify their interest in Benfica star Joao Neves.
That’s according to The Mirror, which claims that “Manchester United are willing to start talks early this year in a bid to sign teenage superstar Joao Neves from Benfica this summer.”
The 19-year-old has already become a regular in the Portuguese team’s midfield and has played 27 times for them this season in all competitions.
The player currently has a release clause of 120 million euros but is considered one of the elite young players in European football.
The outlet claims that United and Sir Jim Ratcliffe see a move for the star as a way to “improve their recruitment this year”.
Neves “is considered a priority investment after a difficult season for the Old Trafford club.”
The Eagles are not willing to sell the player mid-season, but although the Old Trafford team need to “be patient to get their man”, “they are prepared to start working soon”.
Catalan sources have already reported that Barcelona would love to sign the player but they already see him heading to Manchester because his agent, Jorge Mendes, prefers to take him to the Premier League.
Furthermore, Portuguese media have claimed that United are in “pole position” for the teenage sensation.
While The Mirror only refers to his current deal, it has been reported elsewhere that Neves could be close to signing a new deal that could raise his release clause to around €150m.
If that were to happen, it could significantly complicate any transfer.
Described as a player “known for disrupting play and instigating attacks from deep”, it is clear why the Red Devils would be interested in such a talent and fans will be salivating at the prospect of pairing him with Kobbie Mainoo for years to come.
