A massive feud with Isaac Chamberlain is the carrot dangling in front of Tommy McCarthy ahead of his exit to the Danger Zone.
The British Boxing Board of Control granted a request from promoter Eddie Hearn for ‘Mac Attack’s clash against Cheavon Clarke to be a final eliminator for the British title.
Hearn made the request with Clarke’s career in mind, but it is a move the Belfast man can benefit from.
The British title may not hold much appeal for a former European champion who has been flirted with a world title fight in recent years, but a clash with Chamberlin is mouth-watering and would be important for the MHD cruiserweight.
The most recent BBBofC circular confirmed:
“The stewards decided to approve an application from promoter Eddie Hearn for the aforementioned final elimination contest, which will take place on Saturday 27 January 2024 in Belfast.”
The Oliver Plunketts graduate comes into the fight aware that Matchroom is trying to use his name to build Clarke, but he is determined to upset the applecart at Ulster Hall on January 27.
Training Mark Dunlop’s mentor fighter for the DAZN-streamed clash against the unbeaten prospect will be a team including friends and former professionals Paddy Gallagher and Mark Ginley.
“We are all close friends, we grew up together,” McCarthy told Irish-boxing.com.
“Mark is the leader of our gang,” he adds, smiling, “and Paddy and I have known each other since I was 6 years old.
“We were talking and we realized that in our group of friends we have all the tools to have a great camp. The guys own gyms, they know what needs to be done to train a fighter, they can put together the program and they have experience fighting at the championship level. So it makes sense to have two of my best friends and my cousin on my side.”
McCarthy faces Clarke on a Matchroom and Conlan Boxing card headlined by Lewis Crocker against José Félix Jr, with Paddy Donovan also appearing.
