Floyd Mayweather Jr. took to social media to alert fans about an upcoming fight between Ryan Garcia and WBA light welterweight champion Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, calling it “One of the most anticipated fights of this year.
Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) recently changed direction by fighting Devin Haney for his WBC belt, choosing to fight Rolly Romero for his WBA title. If the fight takes place, it will be interesting to see what the PPV price will be and if it will generate many buys.
PPV Outlook: A Million Dollar Question
Ryan will be able to call the shots against anyone in the 140-pound division if he wins, and the fight generates plenty of PPV buys like his clash against Gervonta Davis did last year. That event generated over a million purchases and it’s unclear if it was due to Ryan.
Romero is not as popular as Tank Davis, so Ryan won’t be able to count on him as much to help promote the fight. Rolly was entertained during the press conferences for his fight with Tank Davis, but that was it.
During the interviews, he seemed disinterested, irritable, and was unable to remain present in the conversation. He always looks around her, seeming distracted. If Rolly acts the same way, he will be dead weight for Ryan and will be of no help in promoting the event. Hopefully, Mayweather can help promote the fight by giving interviews to pick up the slack.
Mayweather said nothing about Rolly’s WBA mandatory Ismael Barroso, who is next in line to challenge Romero for his title after his first-round knockout victory over Ohara Davies.
Barroso captured both the WBA interim title and the mandatory spot with that victory. So if the fight between Ryan Garcia and Rolly Romero is going to happen, Barroso will be given a step aside.
