Jamie Carragher has shed light on a case where Liverpool fans could be glad Jurgen Klopp’s trial was overturned by the club’s hierarchy.
In June 2017, the Reds completed one of the biggest transfers in their history with the acquisition of Mo Salah from Roma for £36.9m (The Guardian). However, if the manager had his way, it would have been a different player who would have bolstered our attacking options that summer.
Speaking on The Overlap during a discussion about which stakeholders should have the most say in terms of a club’s transfer policy, the Sky Sports pundit revealed: “A really interesting one is Mo Salah, and Jürgen Klopp has been quite open about that. . He didn’t want to sign Mo Salah.
“I wanted to sign Julian Brandt (I think he was in Leverkusen at the time) and Liverpool had tried to sign Salah when he went to Chelsea. [in 2014], so the people behind the scenes were still there. Then Salah went to Rome and there [Liverpool hierarchy] They were very firm that “No, we have to sign this player.”
“If you look at what Mo Salah has done. It could easily be the other way around, but I think the idea that a coach should buy all the players I don’t think is correct.”
Brandt has had a distinguished career in his native Germany, surpassing 400 combined appearances for Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund and earning 47 caps for his country (Transfermarkt).
However, every Liverpool fan on Earth will be eternally grateful that the club chose Salah in 2017, and the Egyptian became our fifth top scorer of all time with 204 goals and counting (lfchistory.net), often being the Reds’ difference maker in their time of need.
We’re sure Klopp won’t be too bothered that he’s been disallowed!
