West Ham are monitoring Feyenoord’s star striker Santiago Giménez. The Mexican international previously earned links with top teams such as Barcelona and Real Madrid. However, Giménez wants to have guaranteed playing time if he leaves the Dutch team. This could hinder the Spanish duo’s chances of signing the Mexican in January.
Gimenez has been in incredible form for Feyenoord during the current campaign. The 22-year-old striker has racked up 20 goals and five assists in just 22 total appearances for the club. The Mexican currently co-leads the Eredivisie in goals along with Vangelis Pavlidis of AZ Alkmaar with 18.
The Times reports that Feyenoord currently values Giménez at around $38 million. However, the Dutch team would prefer to keep the star at least until the summer. The outlet suggests that the club believes the striker’s value will only increase in the coming months.
The Feyenoord coach does not rule out leaving in January
While Feyenoord want to keep Giménez beyond this month, coach Arne Slot hasn’t exactly 100% ruled out a sale of the striker in January. “If the best thing for the club is to sell it, so be it,” Slot recently stated.
“Of course, I will give my arguments, but it is not the case that if Dennis [te Kloese, Feyenoord’s chief executive] If you convince me that it has to be done, I will deliver my contract the next day.”
“Of course, everyone understands that we prefer to sell at the end of the season. But if an offer is made that cannot be refused, so that in the future we can also pay salaries and transfers, like the competition does, then we, as Feyenoord, will also be able to take the next step.”
Feyenoord is currently second in the Eredivisie standings and would prefer Giménez to remain in the team to help fight for a title. The Dutch team bought the forward from Cruz Azul in 2022 for about $6 million.
West Ham could use Santiago Giménez as a reinforcement
West Ham’s interest in Giménez is not exactly surprising. Not only do some of the best teams in Europe want the Mexican international. The Hammers could do with a real centre-forward. Michail Antonio is 33 years old and currently suffering from a knee injury. The club also has Danny Ings. However, the Englishman has only played sparingly this season under David Moyes.
With the club thin up front, Moyes recently opted to deploy Jarrod Bowen as a centre-forward. The England international is perhaps the club’s best player. He traditionally plays on the right wing. Although Bowen has performed well in his new role, signing a true centre-forward could allow him to fill his most familiar position.
West Ham have also had recent success in recruiting players from Eredivisie clubs. Moyes recently acquired Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez from Ajax earlier this summer. Both players have become key stars of the current Hammers team. Moyes could sell Ings and other fringe players and use the funds on Gimenez before the end of the month.
