May Bank Holiday weekend celebrations could be extra special this year.
Irish-boxing.com understands Matchroom is targeting the first weekend in May for a massive fight for the undisputed light welterweight title between rivals Katie Taylor and Chantelle Cameron.
Eddie Hearn revealed this week that “positive conversations” have been held with the GAA regarding bringing a card starring Taylor to the famous Croke Park stadium.
Irish-boxing.com understands that May 4 is the date being discussed for what would be one of the biggest Irish sporting events in history.
It should be noted that fight night will be May 4; in fact, any fight night in Croke Park is still a long way off. Talks have only just begun and Matchroom and the GAA have all the issues they previously made public still to resolve. However, early May is the desired deadline for the first clash at Jones Road since Muhammad Ali beat Al Blue Lewis in July 1972.
Irish-boxing.com also understands that Matchroom has had discussions about a back-up plan with the Aviva Stadium and that the date being discussed for a fight there is later in the summer.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, Eddie Hearn said: “We have been in talks with Croke [Park]”Hearn told Helwani. “They are moving in the right direction. I think it’s good to say it without getting too emotional.”
The promoter, who is bringing a Lewis Crocker-fronted show to Belfast later this month, says he will now open talks with Chantelle Cameron about a trilogy, but hinted Serrano could be a back-up plan.
“We are going to talk to Chantelle Cameron’s team. Obviously, Amanda Serrano fights on March 2 on DAZN. Chantelle Cameron is the fight I think Katie would like. It is the fight that the fans would like. 1-1 – two tremendous fights.
