Jadon Sancho has officially rejoined Borussia Dortmund from Manchester United on loan. The England international spent four years with the Bundesliga giants before returning to his native country in 2021. United previously bought Sancho for around $92 million, but the star was unable to replicate his impressive play for the club. .
The winger only managed to score 12 goals and add six assists in 82 total games with the Red Devils. The youngster not only did not perform well on the field, but also fell out with coach Erik ten Hag. Sancho had a public dispute with the United manager at the start of the current campaign. As a result, the winger had not played for the club since the end of August.
However, Sancho now returns to Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the season. There is no option to make the transfer permanent in the agreement between both teams. United will cover the majority of the winger’s huge salary, but Dortmund have agreed to pay a loan fee. This package is expected to cost around $4 million. There are additional add-ons that could also be activated depending on the success of the Bundesliga and Champions League.
Jadon Sancho’s return to Dortmund comes on loan
Although Sancho has failed at United, Dortmund now hope the winger can get back on track in Germany. The England star previously racked up 114 combined goals and assists in 137 total appearances for the club from 2017 to 2021. Sancho was instrumental in Dortmund’s DFB-Pokal triumph during the 2020/21 campaign. He collected six goals and five assists in six games in the competition.
After the transfer was finally made official, Sancho declared that he would “come home” to Dortmund. “When I walked into the locker room today, it felt like ‘coming home,'” Sancho said Thursday.
“I know the club perfectly, I have always been very close to the fans and I have never lost contact with those responsible. “I can’t wait to see my teammates again, go out on the field, play football with a smile on my face, receive assists, score goals and help the club qualify for the Champions League.”
The winger will try to give Dortmund a boost in the Bundesliga
The German club is going through a bit of a weak season so far. It usually appears in the Champions League. At the moment, Dortmund are fighting to qualify.
BVB is currently fifth in the Bundesliga standings, one spot away from automatically qualifying for next year’s Champions League. Dortmund is also six points behind fourth place in the national division.
However, the club has reached the knockout round of the competition during the current campaign. Dortmund previously finished first in Group F, widely considered the ‘Group of Death’, and will face PSV Eindhoven in February and March.
Sancho’s current contract with United does not expire until 2026. The Red Devils also have the option to extend the deal for a further year. However, it seems unlikely that the winger will finally finish this contract in its entirety. Dortmund could look to renegotiate a permanent deal if Sancho performs well for the rest of the season.
