Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya takes some time to speak with Fight Hub TV about his desire to broker a Mexican fight between Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguía, where things come between him and Ryan Garcia, and more. Check out some excerpts from the interview below.
De La Hoya talks about whether there will be difficulties in making a possible fight between Canelo Álvarez and Jaime Munguía given his tense past relationship with Canelo
“The past is the past. And Canelo, I’m glad you understand that there are a lot of rumors and the truth is that yes, we had a great career together, me as a promoter, him as a fighter. We made him earn a lot of money, he put himself on the pedestal ; he’s the king of boxing now. And I’m proud of that. I really am, because I had something to do with his career.
“Now I can’t control the rumors about his career and that’s probably what happened. But for me, if there is an opportunity to work with him again, I would love to because there are a lot of good memories between us inside and outside the ring. But there’s a tremendous opportunity here for both guys. Imagine two Mexicans inside the ring at the highest level. We haven’t seen that since Barrera vs Morales. We haven’t seen that since Israel Vázquez and Rafael Márquez. We haven’t seen that in a long time.
“I would love to be part of history. “I would love for Canelo to be part of that story, and Munguía, and give the boxing fans an incredible show because they know it’s going to be a war.”
On whether he has solved his problems with Ryan García
“Ryan is young. He is now maturing and I firmly believe that he has a lot of bad advice. Yeah. And I feel for him, I really do, because there are a lot of people out there who are going to give you the wrong advice and it’s a cruel world when you’re the leader and when you’re the one making money and you’re growing up and you’re young and You have all these whispers in your ear.
“I just hope Ryan finds that person who gives him the best advice in the world and listens to him, who wants the best for him. I thought he might have been that person but, you know, he listens to other people and it’s something I can’t control. All I can do is try to do the best job I can for him.”
