History of the Galatasaray vs Fenerbahce rivalry

The first match between these two historic teams was played more than 100 years ago, in 1909. It was played on the site where Fenerbahçe’s stadium is now located, but Galatasaray won 2-0 in the friendly.

It helps to heighten the importance of the rivalry when both clubs are among the most dominant in a country’s history, and this is certainly the case here. Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray are one and two respectively in terms of Turkish league titles in history. They are also among the top winners of the Turkish Cup.

But what makes this rivalry interesting is its unique geography.

Both clubs play in Istanbul, making it an important intercity derby like those in London, Madrid, Manchester, Buenos Aires, etc. But the Bosphorus Strait runs through the city and marks the line between Europe and Asia. Galatasaray plays on the European side of the city, while Fenerbahçe is based in Asia.

Fenerbahçe has the all-time overall lead between the two teams, but the results are still fairly close, with about a third of the result going to each team and the other third being draws.
