Premier League to nominate Antonio Conte for manager of month

Despite missing Tottenham’s management for most of February, the Premier League is set to nominate Spurs manager Antonio Conte as manager of the month. Conte officiated in one Premier League game, a 4-1 defeat at Leicester City.

Instead, the award, based on the club’s performance for the month, is a credit to Cristian Stellini. Stellini is the interim manager when Conte cannot be on the bench. He led Spurs to three wins while Conte was out. Those were against Manchester City, West Ham and most recently Chelsea.

Stellini’s work with Spurs put the club in the top four, although Newcastle have played two fewer games than Tottenham. Earlier in the season, Conte said that finishing in the top four would be a big challenge.

In any case, Antonio Conte was never fired. He continued to be Tottenham’s coach although he could not be on the sidelines. The only reason he wasn’t there was because of health problems. He underwent gallbladder surgery and continues to recover in Italy. However, Conte kept in touch with Stellini. He had a say in the choice of the team and even in the decisions of the game, such as substitutions.

Therefore, Conte still has a big influence on what happens with Tottenham. Furthermore, he played a key role in Spurs’ form in the Premier League in February.

Conte nominated for Premier League manager of the month

Cristian Stellini is on the bench for Tottenham’s FA Cup tie on Wednesday against Sheffield United. However, Antonio Conte will soon return to the bench. His recovery from surgery should have him ready for the Wolves clash.

Stellini’s omission of the manager of the month award instead of Conte is a bit harsh. However, Stellini has worked with Antonio Conte since 2019 at Inter Milan. In addition, the prize does not seem too important to him. He said the team matured in Conte’s absence, highlighted by the 2-0 win over Chelsea.

“The team reacts this way and takes a lot of responsibility,” Stellini said. “Everyone, players who play and players who sometimes don’t play. That’s why I’m glad to stay here and keep Antonio’s chair warm.”
