Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has surpassed Peter Schmeichel to record more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper previously on the club’s books.

When United won 2-0 against Newcastle United, De Gea had 181 clean sheets.

The next best goalkeeper in United’s illustrious history is the legendary Schmeichel, who managed 180 clean sheets.

Schmeichel was quick to congratulate De Gea on breaking his record and winning the Carabao Cup.

Schmeichel wrote via his official Twitter account: “The 180th clean sheet was hard earned.”

“Well deserved with two stops out of this world. Well done David de Gea.”

“Many congratulations, what a fantastic achievement.”

As United produced a defensive masterclass in the second half to keep the Magpies away, De Gea was not required to be on the alert to make any game-saving interventions.

The goals for the red devils came through Casemiro and an own goal from Sven Botman.

Reacting to the trophy win marking a break from the club’s six-year drought, De Gea wrote on his official Twitter account: “Moments made in the past, memories made now.”

“We fight together as a group.”

“We suffer, we all feel pain, but this victory belongs to everyone. This is what the United do. We don’t stop now.”

De Gea’s fantastic cup achievement comes amid the uncertainty surrounding his immediate future as United’s number one goalkeeper.

There are doubts about the suitability of the Spaniard for an Erik ten Hag style of play.

The distribution and initiation of the De Gea sweep action has been launched.

There were no such doubts at Wembley. Every time the 32-year-old was required, he stepped up and proved his worth.
