Ornstein provides interesting Liverpool update at a ‘critical time’ for the club

David Ornstein has revealed that the process to find a replacement for Julian Ward is underway at Liverpool, but explained that AS Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell will not head to Anfield despite the club’s “strong consideration”.

It was announced in November that Ward, who only replaced Michael Edwards as sporting director in the summer, would move from Anfield at the end of the current campaign.

The 41-year-old was primarily responsible for the signings of Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez, as well as overseeing contract negotiations for Mo Salah’s new deal at Anfield.

“The process to replace Ward as sporting director is already underway,” Ornstein told NBC Sports (via Football Fancast). “It is in its early stages. They seriously considered AS Monaco’s Paul Mitchell but that won’t happen, he will stay there.

“Among the other candidates or names they look up to is Eintracht Frankfurt’s Marcus Krosche, but there will be a number of options and let’s see how it plays out because this is a critical time for Liverpool and the FSG.”

The aforementioned Mitchell was previously tagged ‘one of the favourites’ to replace Ward on Merseyside and was even seen at Anfield ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.

However, it now looks like he will stay with the Ligue 1 side.

Liverpool have been lauded in recent years for the impressive deal they have completed on the transfer market and the hope is that we can find someone who can build on the foundation laid by their predecessors.

With Klopp’s side struggling for consistency this season, it is believed that the club will be active in the summer transfer window and we must ensure that the deal we complete is successful.

Considering that the FSG is still open to hearing offers about future investment at Anfield, it’s a somewhat uncertain period for the club both on and off the pitch.
