MLS extends Adidas sponsorship deal for reported $830 million

Major League Soccer, or MLS, and Adidas have announced an extension to their partnership and team agreement. The multi-year extension means the German sportswear brand will continue as a supplier to the league and its clubs. Adidas and MLS have been working together since the league’s introduction in 1996. This new agreement runs through the 2030 campaign.

CNBC reports that the deal is Adidas’ largest investment in North American soccer. The news outlet suggested that the new deal is worth approximately $830 million. This would be an increase of $130 million compared to their previous partnership terms.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber did not deny the figure when asked about it during an interview with the news organization.

Both Adidas and MLS are delighted to expand the partnership and agreement.

“We are very pleased to expand our partnership with Adidas, the world’s leading soccer brand.” Garber said in a press release. “Adidas has been helping drive the popularity of MLS and the sport of soccer in North America for generations and we look forward to working closely with them to accelerate our growth leading up to and after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”

“We are very proud to extend our partnership with Major League Soccer,” said Adidas CEO Bjorn Gulden. “It’s amazing to see the growth and success of the league and soccer in North America and the work that has gone into it. Football is an important part of our history and who we are at Adidas. We are committed to helping grow the game and we couldn’t be more excited as we get closer to the 2026 World Cup hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.”

Garber also confirms more MLS expansion teams

Along with appearing on CNBC to discuss the Adidas extension, Garber also revealed future plans for the league. Doug McIntyre reports that MLS wants to decide on its 30th club by the end of the year. Garber specifically named Las Vegas and San Diego as possible candidates for the expansion team. He even suggested that the league could go beyond 30 clubs in the near future.

MLS currently consists of 29 teams and the upcoming 2023 season is scheduled to begin on February 25.
