Pep Guardiola could quit City if club lied to him about finances

Pep Guardiola could leave Manchester City due to allegations that the club broke financial rules. News broke on Monday morning that the Premier League accused Manchester City of inflating their sponsorship deals. If true, the club brought in money directly through the United Arab Emirates ownership group.

While the punishments can range from fines and point deductions to expulsion from the Premier League, there may be an additional consequence.

Martyn Ziegler of The Times cited earlier comments made by City Manager Pep Guardiola. In May 2022, Guardiola declared that if he found out that City lied to him about finances, he would leave immediately.

“When they are accused of something I ask them: ‘Tell me about it.’ They explain and I believe them. I told them: ‘If they lie to me, the next day I’m not here. I’ll be away and I won’t be your friend anymore.’”

The Spaniard, who also directed Barcelona and Bayern Munich, likes to keep a clean boat. Trophies are important, yes. But doing well for the club and the fans is more.

“What I like is to represent a club that does things well [and] Well. It’s not about winning the Champions League and the Premier League, we want to do well for our people and our fans.”

Pep Guardiola could leave City despite rampant success

Guardiola signed a two-year contract extension with City in November. He keeps him at the club until the 2024/25 campaign. That would be his ninth season at the helm of Manchester City.

However, that could be out of control. Pep Guardiola was not here when these accusations began. The Premier League allegations date back to 2009/10. Guardiola just arrived at the Etihad in 2016/17.

Of course, the allegations extend through the 2017/18 season, Guardiola’s third in the dugout at City.

Pep Guardiola has yet to comment on the recent Premier League revelations. However, City vehemently objected, countering allegations that the club aided investigators and committed no offence.
