Newcastle United held at home by West Ham

Newcastle United drew 1-1 at West Ham United in the Premier League at St James’ Park on Saturday night.

The hosts started the game in dramatic fashion when Joe Willock had the ball in the back of the net after just 37 seconds.

Early VAR intervention

VAR stepped in and scored it after replays suggested Miguel Almiron had failed to keep the ball in play and West Ham were awarded a goal kick.

However, two minutes later, the Magpies took the lead after the hosts got the ball back in midfield.

Sean Longstaff, who has been in excellent form in recent weeks, released Callum Wilson, and the England international opened up his body to move past Lukasz Fabianski at home.

However, West Ham settled into the game after the shaky start. David Moyes’s side did not let their heads drop as the midfield unleashed some clean passes to gain possession in midfield.

While the Hammers were looking for an equalizer, it was Lucas Paquetá who restored equality in the 32nd minute.

The Brazilian midfielder slipped in at the end of a Declan Rice corner and, after a touch, past Nick Pope. This was the first goal Newcastle had conceded in seven league games.

The Hammers were the better of the two sides going into half time and the same trend continued well into the second half when both sides went for the go-ahead goal.

Eddie Howe brought in new signing Anthony Gordon on 69 minutes as the former Everton winger was greeted with a roar by the vociferous home crowd. However, neither side could conjure up clear chances as the match ended in a draw.

The result means Newcastle have drawn ten league games this season and currently sit fourth with 40 points from 21 games. West Ham meanwhile sit 16th, two points above the relegation zone on 19 points.

Moyes, commenting on the result, later said:

“We deserve a lot of credit for coming here and putting on such a good performance. We played very well in the first half, if you exclude the first minute. we got away with the first one and gave them a goal 30 seconds later.

“We responded absolutely fantastic; We played brilliantly well in the first half. I was very happy with the way the players played, we defended well, it’s just one point, but it was a tough game away from home and they’re still on a bit of a streak. It wasn’t the worst result, if we play as well as we did today next week we’ll be happy”.
