Danny Murphy names two midfielders Liverpool should ‘go hard’ to sign

Pundit Danny Murphy has named two players his former club Liverpool should “strive” to sign in the summer.

Liverpool have just overseen a deafeningly quiet transfer window with only one arrival at the club throughout the month in the form of Dutch striker Cody Gakpo.

While the 23-year-old was a welcome addition to the squad, supporters felt a striker wasn’t as necessary as a midfielder would have been.

The midfield department at Anfield is significantly reduced compared to other positions on the pitch; Jurgen Klopp relies on older and injury-prone players such as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner, or young players with little experience of competing in the top flight such as Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliott.

Club captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are also two who have looked good this season, and their performances have forced Klopp to bench them regularly.

Murphy weighed in on the dilemma on talkSPORT, saying: “We’re talking about a team that wasn’t far from winning a four-time win. They don’t look at it, it doesn’t seem like they have that many legs or that they’re very hungry. They are missing players, of course they are, but they had them at the beginning of the season and the results are still the same.

“So I think a rebuild is needed, if you want. When I say rebuild, it means players go out and a few more go in. The midfield area will need to refresh, and I would love that. [signing Bellingham] it happen because he is exactly what they need. But I don’t think they just need one, I think they probably need two.

“I would go for Bellingham and Rice, I would try to get them both. I think why not go hard or go home but with two grand instead of four or five? Rice and Bellingham enter Liverpool’s midfield.”
