Juventus watching as Smalling tells Roma what he wants

AS Roma are fighting to keep Chris Smalling in Rome while negotiating a new contract with the Englishman.

Smalling has been an improved defender for most of his time with the Giallorossi and Jose Mourinho wants the former Manchester United player to stay.

The defender is also interested in extending his contract with the Romans, but both parties are struggling to reach an agreement.

This has encouraged Juventus to stay on the sidelines, hoping to get their hands on the defender as a free agent in the summer.

A report on Tuttomercatoweb reveals that Roma wants him to sign a one-year contract with the same salary or a two-year contract with reduced salary.

However, Smalling wants a two-year contract at the same salary to extend his stay with the Giallorossi.

Juve FC says

Smalling has done well in Italian soccer and will be a seasoned addition to our squad if he moves to Turin, but isn’t he too old for a two-year contract?

At 33, he probably is and we shouldn’t add an older player who would struggle after his first season on our team.

However, if we can offer him a higher salary, the former England international could accept a one-year contract with the option of another season.
