Former Manchester United manager René Meulensteen has commented on the proposed move of Wout Weghorst to Manchester United.
Meulensteen is considered an elite technical coach after the time he spent working with Sir Alex Ferguson.
Working with the first team from 2007 until 2013, the Dutchman is credited with helping Cristiano Ronaldo transform into the player he became. He is currently the assistant coach of the Australian national team and was a key figure in their run to the World Cup round of 16, which saw them lose 2-1 to eventual winners Argentina.
Meulensteen was linked with a return to United following the announcement of Erik ten Hag as manager.
Ten Hag eventually selected Steve McClaren to be his assistant, who he worked with at Eredivisie side Twente.
Speaking to BBC Sport about the profile of the transfers United are targeting in this window, Meulensteen said:
“Erik ten Hag knows what he’s doing for sure.
“He [Wout Weghorst] It is 30 years old, so it is a stopgap due to the ongoing rumors with the acquisition of new owners. That is probably the reason why Ten Hag is forced to make loan agreements.”
Meulensteen then offered his take on Weghorst’s inclusion in the United side:
“[Weghorst] it’s different, that’s why Erik ten Hag is bringing it.
“He offers something more than the other Manchester United forwards don’t, but I don’t think he’ll start every game.”
The deal to sign Weghorst from Burnley has been complicated by the striker not having a buyout clause in his loan deal with Beşiktaş. However, it seems that a resolution between all parties is near.
