Manchester United continued their fine run on Friday in an FA Cup match with Everton. The Red Devils won the matchup 3-1 in front of their home crowd. It was the club’s seventh consecutive victory in all competitions.
The two teams entered Friday heading in two different directions. United had won nine of their last 10 games. In doing so, the club climbed back into the top four of the Premier League. Everton, on the other hand, had not won a game in their last seven matches. In fact, the Merseyside club have picked up just one win in their last 11 games in total.
United scores the first goal after 3 minutes of the match against Everton
Antony opened the scoring 183 seconds into the game. The winger found himself wide open after Marcus Rashford passed past defender Ben Godrey. Rashford sent in a low cross, which was met by Antonio’s outstretched foot. The Brazilian only had to make contact with the ball to score for his team.
However, Everton fought back rather quickly. Demarai Gray hit the post from distance in the 13th minute of the game. The ball bounced off David De Gea before going out for a corner. The Toffees leveled the score just a minute later.
Everton defender scores at both ends
Conor Coady scored his second goal of the campaign after a bizarre mistake by De Gea. The United goalkeeper chose not to pick up a cross sent into the box by Neal Maupay. Instead, the ball slid between the Spaniard’s legs and Coady leaped from just a few feet from the goal.
The Everton centre-back scored again in the second half; however, he went into his own network. Rashford once again beat the Everton defense down the wing, this time it was Seamus Coleman. The England international finally sent in a pass that Coady put in for Jordan Pickford.
Everton thought they had leveled the score once more later in the half. However, the goal was disallowed with the help of VAR. Demarai Gray showed brilliant ability to set up the play, but was in an offside position when he received a pass from Coleman.
United put the game offside at the end of added time. Godfrey brought down substitute Alejandro Garnacho inside the box, despite the fact that the contact seemed minimal. Rashford capped off his Man of the Match performance with a goal from the penalty spot.
Everton, despite the loss, played quite well considering their recent form. However, the pressure continues on head coach Frank Lampard. Alternatively, the Red Devils progressed to the FA Cup fourth round for the ninth successive season.
