Liverpool star gives brutal assessment of team’s failings against Brentford

Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson has made a brutal assessment of what went wrong for the Reds in their 3-1 loss to Brentford last night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side was far from good enough, with Brentford clearly the better side overall as they dealt a potentially significant blow to Liverpool’s top four hopes.

Robertson said Liverpool were lacking in almost every department when he spoke after the match, and the Scotland international also seemed to suggest that the players simply didn’t follow the instructions they were given beforehand.

“Obviously we didn’t do what we were supposed to do. It’s as simple as that,” Robertson was quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

“We didn’t have running backs, we didn’t have anyone tall and wide, we didn’t have anyone in space, we couldn’t keep the ball, we lost second balls, the balls behind them they dealt with, the set pieces they dealt with .

“So yeah, when you add all those things up, you’re never going to get a result in this place. We knew what the Brentfords are good at, it’s not hard to figure out what they’re good at, and they’re very consistent at that. We were prepared as to what we were expecting, but we obviously struggled with that.

“Set pieces were a huge weapon for them, the first two goals came from that, that’s very disappointing from our point of view. You go into halftime down 2-0 and have an uphill battle to fight.

“We tried, the first 15-20 minutes of the second half I think we pushed well, got a goal, obviously scored one, had a couple of half chances and then we started committing more lengths forward at the end. he got in and hit us on the counterattack.

“I don’t think we can have any complaints about today’s result, about where the three points went, I think Brentford deserved it and that’s why we are in the position we are in.”

Liverpool fans will be dismayed to hear this from Robertson as the team need a huge rebuilding job after the success of recent years.

Klopp built a world-class team that won the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020, while they also clinched a domestic cup double last season.

Now, however, it seems that much of the squad has peaked, with recent signings not having been as successful thus far.
