Juventus and USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie is in the crosshairs of several clubs, including Borussia Dortmund and Bournemouth. The year turning towards 2023 means that the January transfer window is officially open. Therefore, clubs can start acquiring new assets for the second half of the campaign.
Weston McKennie could be one of those players, with Borussia Dortmund and Bournemouth expressing interest, according to Calcio Mercato. Juventus wants to sell the American midfielder. After arriving from Schalke in the summer of 2021 for just over $20 million after a season-long loan spell, McKennie didn’t appear on the scene. While he is a decent player, he only shows his brilliance in flashes. Four goals in 29 appearances last season led to three goals and one assist in 16 appearances this season.
Bournemouth and Borussia Dortmund are a couple of clubs targeting Weston McKennie. He has experience in Germany, rising through the ranks with Schalke before making his first-team debut. Then Bournemouth is an interesting landing spot due to the infusion of money from the Cherries under new American ownership.
In turn, Juventus would use the money to prop up other locations. Paul Pogba returns from injury after missing every game of the current season. World Cup runner-up Adrien Rabiot is the other midfield man Max Allegri can use. Juventus believe they can still get a decent sum from the sale of McKennie.
Juventus looking to sell Weston McKennie to Dortmund or Bournemouth
Part of McKennie’s challenge is simply staying healthy. Just as the midfielder seeks to catch up with him in Serie A, an injury slows his progression. In his two and a half seasons thus far in Turin, McKennie missed a total of 27 games due to injury or illness. The longest period was from the end of February until the end of the 2021/22 campaign. A broken metatarsal kept him out as Juventus limped on to fourth in the league.
Despite the injury history, Calcio Mercato estimates that Juventus can earn around $40 million for McKennie. There are benefits to selling Americans, with three players transferring to the Premier League for at least $24 million in recent years. Bournemouth could join those ranks by bringing one of the USMNT’s biggest players to the Premier League.
Or Borussia Dortmund could bring McKennie back to Germany. McKennie performed decently as a young midfielder in the German top division. Additionally, Dortmund have a reputation for making the most of players and generating talent. Remember, McKennie is still only 24 years old. He promises to be a key component of the success of the USMNT for the next decade.
