Jamie Carragher believes the signing of Cody Gakpo was “necessary” and has admitted surprise at the fee Liverpool paid for the Dutchman.
The 23-year-old was recently signed by PSV for an initial £37m and will wear the number 18 shirt at Anfield.
Although Jurgen Klopp’s priority is to sign a new midfielder, the former Reds defender is satisfied with the deal his old club has done.
“I think it’s necessary at the moment, which is why I asked Jurgen Klopp the question,” the former Liverpool defender told Sky Sports (via the Daily Mail). “The wound of [Luiz] Diaz was a big deal, you look at his record in the Netherlands and you would expect those numbers, we know the Eredivisie is not Premier League standard and there have been some hits and misses.
“Right now, when you look at Liverpool playing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the left wing tonight, that’s not his position, the options on the bench for Liverpool are not good. I think Díaz will be here for another two or three months, [Diogo] Jota won’t be back anytime soon, so I think he’s a great signing.

“Another thing that surprises me is the price, I thought it would be a little more expensive, especially the price Antony cost, a similar player profile, I think maybe it would be Liverpool.
“Yes, look ahead to next season, what will happen when Diaz returns because he plays on the left wing, but they can also move position and if the time comes they will probably sell one of them if they can’t fit in. but I think it’s a good decision and signing”.
