Benfica Manager Roger Schmidt Makes Transfer Admission About Enzo Fernandez

Benfica manager Roger Schmidt has said he will respect the decision Enzo Fernández makes regarding his future amid transfer interest from elsewhere.

Enzo Fernández has attracted transfer interest from several top European clubs following his impressive performances for the Argentina national soccer team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The 21-year-old player participated in all seven matches Argentina played in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, starting five of them and coming on as a substitute in the other two. His performances in Qatar also earned him the young player of the tournament award.

Several top European clubs have been linked to a move by Enzo Fernández in the January transfer window. Premier League side Chelsea appear to be leading the race to sign the highly rated Argentinian midfielder as they look to bolster their squad.

Benfica manager Roger Schmidt has insisted he will respect any decision Enzo Fernandez makes regarding his future amid transfer interest from Chelsea.

“Until December 31, we are sure that we have all the players and nobody can leave. Then the market opens up and when you have players with great talent, you always run the risk of losing players,” said Roger Schmidt.

Roger Schmidt added: “These young players sometimes have opportunities. It’s not just Enzo, it’s all the players. It’s part of the soccer business. If they have opportunities, they have to make decisions. I can give you advice and recommendations. But I always respected the decisions of the players, because they only have one career.”

Benfica signed Enzo Fernández only in the previous summer transfer window. The Portuguese team signed the young midfielder from the Argentine River Plate. But it seems likely that he will leave the club in the January transfer window.

According to reports, Enzo Fernández’s contract with Benfica has a termination clause, which can be activated to sign the midfielder for the Argentina national soccer team.

Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool are also among the clubs linked to Enzo Fernández’s move. However, it is Chelsea who seem most likely to land the 21-year-old.

Since signing for Benfica, Enzo Fernández has featured in 24 matches in all competitions for the Primeira Liga side. He has also notched three goals and five assists in those matches for Benfica.

Meanwhile, Fernández’s current contract with Benfica runs until 2027. That means he has more than four years left on his current deal with the Primeira Liga outfit.
