How LaLiga TV revenue compares to Premier League money

LaLiga in Spain and the Premier League in England are two of the best soccer leagues in the world. Both divisions also usually sit at the top of the rankings of the most watched leagues around the world. After all, there are a massive nine clubs between these two leagues. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur regularly appear at the top of the annual lists of the most popular teams.

However, there is quite a large difference in revenue between the two leagues. In the 2021/22 season, LaLiga generated around 1.5 billion dollars in television revenue to distribute among its 20 teams. This is obviously a massive figure. However, the Spanish league is also a three-headed monster when it comes to money.

The competition eclipses the income of LaLiga TV

Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid receive much more money than the other Spanish clubs. In fact, the trio grossed a combined $481 million. This is around a third of all revenue shared by LaLiga.

While the numbers for La Liga are impressive, the revenue for the Premier League is staggering. During the same time period, England’s top flight teams received around $3.1 billion in television revenue. That is more than double what LaLiga generated. Unsurprisingly, the Premier League ‘Big Six’ were at the top of the financial table; however, the money was shared out much more evenly compared to LaLiga.

For example, Manchester United alone generated approximately $7.8 million more in television revenue than West Ham United. The Red Devils are one of the most popular clubs in the entire world. West Ham, on the other hand, would probably not be in the top 20 for worldwide popularity.

The relegated Norwich earned more money than Sevilla

Comparing the two leagues also becomes very interesting. For example, Norwich generated around $118m in revenue and finished bottom of the Premier League in 2021/22. These television revenues are higher than those received by any of the 17 LaLiga teams. Only Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid received more income than Norwich last season.

The Premier League certainly reigns supreme when it comes to money. It really is the richest soccer league in the world.
