Enzo Fernández: Chelsea have opened direct talks with Benfica about a move for Argentine soccer midfielder Enzo Fernández, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Enzo Fernández, who was part of the Argentina soccer team that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup title, has attracted transfer interest from several top European clubs.

He has been linked with a move away from Benfica in the upcoming January transfer window, with Chelsea at the head of the queue to acquire the services of the highly rated 21-year-old.

Chelsea are looking to bolster their squad in the January transfer window and are reportedly interested in signing Enzo Fernandez, who won the tournament’s young player award for his performances at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Chelsea have opened direct talks with Benfica about the signing of Fernández, whom the Portuguese team signed from River Plate in the summer of 2022.

The Italian journalist also reports that Chelsea want to offer Benfica “a huge transfer fee instead of paying the release clause in a solution.”

Fabrizio Romano also informs that Enzo Fernández has already said ‘yes’ to his signing for Chelsea. However, Manchester United and Liverpool, also linked with a move for Fernández, have yet to make an offer for the Argentine midfielder.

Meanwhile, Fernández reportedly has a buyout clause of 120 million euros in his contract with Benfica.

Benfica president Rui Costa was recently quoted by DAZN as saying that they will let Enzo Fernandez leave the club in the January transfer window if his release clause is met.

However, Benfica have since denied the comments allegedly said by Rui Costa, insisting that the club president never said those words circulating in the media.

Meanwhile, Benfica manager Roger Schmidt has said he will respect any decision Fernández makes regarding his future amid transfer interest from some of the best clubs in Europe.

Enzo Fernández’s current contract with Benfica runs until the end of June 2027. That means the Argentine midfielder has more than four years left on his contract with the Portuguese team.

However, he is expected to leave Benfica in the January transfer window or next summer given the transfer interest he has attracted.
