Arsenal and Man United battle for João Félix

Both Arsenal and Manchester United are interested in signing João Félix from Atlético Madrid. David Ornstein broke the news of the transfer during NBC Sports’ coverage of the Premier League on Wednesday.

However, The Athletic reporter added that United don’t have much to spend this January.

“I don’t think there is a lot of money to spend at Manchester United,” Ornstein proclaimed. “I don’t want to disappoint the fans, but it will most likely have to be a loan deal.”

Ornstein also referenced new Liverpool player Cody Gakpo. “Curiously, [United] I had admiration for Cody Gakpo,” the reporter continued. “They almost signed him in the summer window. Erik ten Hag is a big fan, but United are focused on a central striker for January and they see Gakpo primarily as a striker. And therefore they are also looking at someone like João Félix, if they can make that loan.”

Spanish club makes 100 million dollar player available

Atleti are receiving offers for Félix after he fell down the club’s pecking order. Manager Diego Simeone has given the Portuguese international just five LaLiga starts during the current campaign. Ornstein, however, reminded United fans that the club is currently in handcuffs due to a possible change in ownership.

“I think we have to remember the United sale here,” Ornstein said. “They are aiming for a full sale of Manchester United in the first quarter of 2023. And therefore the Glazer family will not be willing to sanction a massive cash outlay on deals at this time of year.”

Arsenal joins United in the search for João Félix

Along with United, Arsenal are also interested in Félix. Although they also need Atleti’s demand to drop. Recent reports suggest that a total package for Felix could cost the team around $23 million for just a six-month deal. The Spanish giants are looking for a huge loan fee, as well as the player’s salary to cover.

“[Arsenal] they are also interested in signing João Félix on loan from Atlético de Madrid”, stated Ornstein. “Jorge Mendes, his agent, knows that he needs to move João Félix because he is in disgrace at Atlético de Madrid. And Arsenal are keen to do so, but the numbers would have to go down for that to happen. And I think they will. It would only be a six-month loan.”

United need reinforcements in their quest to return to the top four in the Premier League. Arsenal, on the other hand, are currently top of the table and are looking to strengthen a thin squad.
