Klopp discusses Firmino’s Liverpool future following Gakpo’s arrival

Jurgen Klopp has claimed that the signing of Cody Gakpo “will not have any impact” on Bobby Firmino’s future and has admitted that he wants the 31-year-old to stay at Liverpool.

The Brazil international is out of contract at Anfield at the end of the season and has yet to agree new terms to extend his stay, but the former Borussia Dortmund manager has revealed that the clubs are ‘in talks’ with him about a new deal.

“We are in talks with Bobby and I want him to stay. No impact,” Klopp said in his press conference earlier today (as relayed by The Athletic’s James Pearce).

Following the arrival of Darwin Núñez in the summer, many expected the former Hoffenheim man to have limited playing time this term, but with Luis Díaz and Diogo Jota yet to return from prolonged injuries, our No. 9 has thrived.

In 21 appearances for the FA Cup holders this season (in all competitions), Firmino has scored nine goals and registered four assists.

It could be argued that some competition for his place in the team has resulted in his top form and hopefully the arrival of Gakpo will have a similar impact on his performances.

Although the Dutch international is likely to deploy on the left flank, he shone for his national team at the World Cup in Qatar in a more central position and found the net three times.

We are delighted to know that the club is thinking of offering Firmino a new contract, he still has a lot more to do with the red shirt.
