Chelsea ready to sign Enzo Fernández in January window

Supposedly, Chelsea are ready to spend money on Enzo Fernández. The Evening Standard claims that the Blues are content to activate the release clause for the midfielder at Benfica. This fee would be in the region of $125 million.

Fernández was one of the revelation stars of the World Cup with Argentina. The 21-year-old central midfielder was present at every match in his country’s tournament. His performances earned him the Best Young Player award during the competition in Qatar.

Chelsea will need to reinforce their midfield quite soon. The star duo N’Golo Kante and Jorginho have no contract with the club in the summer. Both midfielders, if fit, are usually a midfield mainstay for the Blues. Fernández would certainly take care of one of these places on the list.

The January window is not easy to maneuver

The winter window can be a tough transfer market. Typically, teams don’t want to let their best players leave in the middle of the season. Chelsea boss Graham Potter even touched on this recently. “I would say that the January window is not that easy to find solutions,” Potter said during a press conference last week.

“The team, as I see it, has not worked to the maximum as I would have liked and I think it can do it. I would say the head coach’s job is to focus on the players that are here and make them better. There’s room for improvement there for sure.”

However, paying a release clause tends to settle any haggling. Surely it would cost Fernández a lot, but the Blues would be filling an important gap for the future. Considering his age, there is even room to grow and improve with Chelsea.

Enzo Fernández not only moves through Chelsea this window

Nor is Fernández the only name strongly linked to the Blues. Christopher Nkunku is also supposed to move to London. The versatile star has reportedly already completed a medical before making the move. Chelsea are also in talks with Monaco over defender Benoit Badiashile. The left-sided center back would cost around $42 million.
