Liverpool returned to domestic action last night after the World Cup break, losing 3-2 to Manchester City at the Etihad.
Supporters of both clubs were warned about their behavior both on and off the pitch ahead of the clash, but it appears a small minority of fans have been involved in a “series of incidents” which are “totally unacceptable”.
A statement issued by both clubs (via Liverpoolfc.com) read: “Liverpool FC, Manchester City FC and our supporter group chairmen have worked together over the past few weeks to remind fans of our expectations and both clubs would like to thank to the vast majority. from fans for his behavior at last night’s Carabao Cup match at the Etihad Stadium.
“However, it is hugely disappointing that there were a number of incidents during last night’s game that are totally unacceptable. These incidents will be fully investigated, reported to the police and the individuals found responsible will be subject to the sanctioning process of their respective club.
“Liverpool FC and Manchester City FC are fully committed to working together to eradicate these issues from our matches. They have no place in football.”

It is currently unclear what the ‘incidents’ actually are, but it is disappointing that despite all the work both clubs have done and continue to do, a small minority of fans simply aren’t listening.
Cheering on your team, singing the songs and rooting for the players on the pitch is what you go to the game for, but it seems some people insist on making trouble.
