Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana has announced that he is retiring from international football. On Friday, Andre Onana took to social media to announce his retirement from international soccer.
Andre Onana was part of the Cameroon national soccer team that participated in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He started for Cameroon in their first match at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, against Switzerland in a Group G match.
However, he was not in Cameroon’s squad for their second Group G match at Qatar 2022 after he reportedly fell out with Cameroon coach Rigobert Song. Speaking after Cameroon’s 3-3 draw with Serbia in a Group G match, Song explained that Onana was not in the squad for disciplinary reasons.
He also left the Cameroon national team before their match against Serbia and was also not part of the squad that faced Brazil in their last Group G game.
Andre Onana confirmed on Friday that he has retired from international football and stated that his history with the Cameroon national team has come to an end.
“Every story, however beautiful it may be, always has an end. And my story with the Cameroonian team has come this far. Players come and go, but Cameroon always comes before any person or player,” Andre Onana said in a statement.
“Cameroon will always be the same as my love for the national team jersey and for our people who have always supported us despite the difficulties.
“My feelings have not changed. My Cameroonian heart will continue to beat, and wherever it goes, it will strive to always raise the Cameroonian flag as high as possible.
“I will continue to support Cameroon as a fan, as 27 million Cameroonians do in every game. I can only thank everyone who trusted me and believed that I could contribute to the team”.
Andre Onana made his debut for the Cameroon national soccer team in 2016. Since then, he has appeared in 34 caps for Cameroon. 14 of those appearances came in 2022, with his last appearance for Cameroon coming in their 1-0 loss to Switzerland at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
At club level, Andre Onana plays for Inter Milan, who signed him to a five-year contract in the summer of 2022. Since then, he has featured in seven games for the Italian giants.
